Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Johnson on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri became one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. With over 50 honorary doctorate degrees Dr. Maya Angelou became a celebrated poet, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. President Barack Obama presented her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor in 2010.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a classic that has remained with me since reading it as a young African American woman waking up to the reality of life in America.
