inGive the gift that lasts a lifetime: the gift of reading. A good book can change the course of a journey through this life. Below is a poem from Scattered Petals, a collection of poetry gathered together to provide encouragement and a sense of hope during times of difficulty, and to provide reminders and re-affirmations during times of ease.
There’s something about the deliberate nature of creating poetic verses that I find beautiful and reassuring when things appear to be hopeless. Life can be difficult, and during some of the most difficult times in my life I’ve found comfort, strength, and inspiration to move forward by writing and reading poetry. I was inspired with the idea to put this book together after going through a very difficult time in my life, and when the storm was over, I felt the strong urge to share hope with others, especially women because we, as mothers, daughters, wives and sisters, tend to be on the front lines when the storms come. The anthology is comprised of poems by writers from diverse walks of life and it is our ardent hope that this book may be of benefit.
Bird Woman
She reaches for the sky
Soaring towards the clouds
Dancing in the air
Her song of gratitude
Whistles upon the wind
Thanking The Creator for life
The world below her wings looks small
Minuscule in comparison to the vastness above
Yet she maintains balance
Floating mid-air
Flight
Is so much more
Than she could have ever imagined

Weathered and warm
I rest in your cobalt shadow, there
is love here and, there is
home here.
Moonshine kisses on collar bone,
mixing melanin with mist.
You hold my
broken body
in your dry coral palms.
Put me together again.
Chipped here and there. No
worse for wear.

There is an inner motion within us
unseen
but known
sensed.
If you sit still long enough
If you can quiet the chatter in your mind
You can travel to a place where you can greet your soul-
Where you can discover the fullness of your self
the distractions of this world can blind you
but this world was never meant to be your hindrance
this world was not designed to cripple you.
We’ve been informed that the kingdom of God comes from within
So I journey inward
dissatisfied with the kingdoms of this world-
seeking to live the authentic, original experience promised by my Lord.
Each step inward
Reaches up
And I find myself climbing the rungs of a ladder
Ascending
and being elevated
enlightened
inspired
guided
blessed
with the favors of my Lord
Now I know myself
and I will not be confined by the assumptions of others
by their perceptions and misconceptions
suspicions
or imagination
I am
Because God is
and only God knows the true nature of my destiny
only God knows the ending of my book-
the deepest mysteries of my soul.
I uncover the truth that is me
and I am healed
I can live in harmony with my surroundings
I am made whole
and my life – my story – becomes that which inspires me to praise
inspires me with gratitude
then I ask
what’s next?
