As of today Muslimah Writers Alliance (MWA) has existed for 10 full years! It’s amazing how time seems to pass so quickly! Established in 2006, MWA is an internationally-based collaboration of Muslim women writers and advocates working together to counter negative and inaccurate perceptions regarding members of the Muslim community and the Islamic faith, and its astounding to look back and see how much the group has grown. We are now 450+ members strong.
In the spring of 2006, I had deserted my writing dreams to concentrate upon recovering from cancer and chemotherapy, raising my son, and on supporting our growing family when I stumbled across the MWA yahoo group. Besides writing poetry in my free time and nurturing a desire to write an Islamic science fiction novel, writing professionally or becoming an author was a distant fantasy. Then I began to interact with this group of compassionate, generous, intelligent and accomplished women and the sisterhood reflected within the group breathed life back into me – I was inspired.
Since then I have been blessed with the opportunity to start my own business, to have published several books, and to have created meaningful and cherished relationships with other Muslim women. Today is an important milestone that I needed to commemorate through writing and may Allah Ta’aala bless and reward Sister Aishah Schwartz for founding this group. May the group and all of its members only continue to flourish and grow in Islam and in purpose. Happy 10th Anniversary MWA! With peace and love!
